MSMC Alert Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  Who can register for MSMC Alert?
All current students, faculty and staff can register for the service.  Persons associated with the college who do not have an MSMC identification number cannot register at this time.

Q.  What contact data should I provide?
The MSMC Alert service allows storing of up to six phone numbers, two email addresses and a mobile phone number representing your text messaging device. The best emergency contact number is probably your mobile phone/text messaging device.  If you have a college e-mail account it will automatically be listed as one of the e-mail contacts.

Q.  Why should I provide more than one contact number?
An emergency can happen at any time and any place.  Providing more than one contact number will increase the likelihood that you will receive an emergency message.  For example, if you only provide your mobile phone number and it is turned off, you will not receive an emergency message until it is turned on.

Q.  Will I be contacted at all the numbers I provide?
Yes.  The system will contact you at each number provided.  You may modify your contact information via the web portal as your personal circumstances change.

Q.  When will MSMC Alert be used?
MSMC Alert will be used to notify you in the event of a campus emergency; however if you select the optional services you will also be notified when there are school cancellations and delays.

Q.  What is SMS?
SMS stands for short messaging service. It's a way to send text over wireless phone systems.  SMS messages are text messages, and are limited in size.

Q.  I heard that my classmate received a voice message, but I did not. Why?
It is possible that we do not have your contact information loaded in MSMC Alert, or it may be inaccurate.  Please use the web portal to verify your information.

Q.  I heard that my classmate received a SMS (text) message on the mobile phone, but I did not. Why?
To receive text messages, you will need to provide the college with your mobile phone number or other text enabled device.  Please use the web portal to verify the information you provided.

Q.  I have a relative who is also registering.  If we both register the same number will it be called twice?
No.  The system is designed to identify duplicate numbers and only call it once for each notification.

Q.  I received the message in my e-mail inbox, but when I clicked the link to play the message nothing happened. Why?
You may not have a default media player like Windows Media Player or Quicktime installed.  Download these players from www.microsoft.com or www.apple.com and install on your computer to listen to messages.

Q.  I received the message but I missed the information. What should I do?
While on the call, you can replay the message by pressing the star key (*) at the end of the message.  You may also check your email to locate the link for that message.

Q.  I received the message but it kept looping/repeating. Why?
The system does its best to detect whether it has reached a live person or an answering machine. Sometimes loud ambient noises may cause the system to loop.  If this happens, use the mute feature on your phone or move to a quieter location.

Q.  I see a caller ID display of 845-569-3777. Who is this?
When Mount Saint Mary College sends a call using MSMC Alert, it will always display caller ID information (845-569-3777).  Please save this number on your mobile phone as a contact (e.g. MSMC Alert) so you will recognize the call as being an emergency notification.

Q.  How do I opt-in to receive text messages?
On the registration page provide the number for your text enabled device in the mobile phone entry and then check the box to the right.

Q. What happens after I sign up for text messaging via the web portal?
After you register, and your contact information has been sent to the provider, MSMC Alert will automatically send a text message to your mobile phone to confirm your request. This occurs between the hours of 1 P.M. and 9 P.M.

Q. What will the confirmation message say?
This will depend on who your carrier is. For all carriers other than T-Mobile the confirmation message will read the following:

Please save these numbers as either the work or fax number in the MSMC Alert contact you created in your mobile phone.   This will let you quickly recognize the text message as cooming from Mount Saint Mary College.  23177 and 63079 are the short codes for our service provider, and cannot be changed.
